SLIC-VideoTM

SLIC-Video is a low-cost ($895) video capture product that enables users with Sun(tm) workstations to view uncompressed, high-quality motion video in a window and to capture motion video frames.

The single-wide SBus SLIC-Video card accepts composite or S-Video input, digitizes the video, scales it, and delivers the video to multimedia applications for display in a resizable window on the workstation. SLIC-Video provides built-in support for the decoding of Closed Caption data.

The SLIC-Video package's full suite of software provides support for both Solaris 1.x and Solaris 2.x. In addition, the package includes example applications, developer's APIs, and complete documentation.

SLIC-Video is an ideal choice for:

Glenn Norem, CEO of MultiMedia Access Corporation said that "SLIC-Video, priced at $895, offers the lowest-cost product with more robust features and higher performance than any other comparable solution available in the industry today. With SLIC-Video, users can view high-quality video in a window on their Sun workstation for a variety of applications where performance and video quality are key issues."

    Performance

SLIC-Video offers motion video performance with frame rates from 10 fps to 30 fps (depending on the computing platform and resolution) and variable resolution formats (from icon to 640x480 NTSC or 768 x 576 PAL) to meet specific application requirements.

Here are some typical performance numbers for different workstations/frame buffers and different display sizes.

    			Full (640x480)	Half (320x240)	Quarter (160x120)
    SS-5 w/GX 15 fps 30 fps 30 fps
    SS-5 w/TCX(8) 14 fps 30 fps 30 fps
    SS-5 w/TCX(24) 7.7 fps 20 fps 30 fps
    SS20 w/SX(8) 19 fps 30 fps 30 fps
    SS20 w/SX(24) 11.5 fps	25 fps 30 fps

    Bundled Software

The SLIC-Video package includes a complete suite of sample applications and APIs to allow immediate access to the functionality and full capabilities of the card. Source code is included for applications such as the Video Viewer. The software suite includes:

    Development Support

SLIC-Video is an ideal platform for ISVs who are developing video-based software. SLIC-Video supports standard interfaces, such as XIL (Solaris 2.x), in addition to providing APIs that are consistent across both Sun OS and Solaris 2.x. The following figure shows the relationship among the APIs.

For researchers and developers who are creating video compression software, SLIC-Video offers fine-grained control of a range of parameters, such as hue, saturation, contrast, and filtering. With SLIC-Video, developers have access to uncompressed video as well as video's even and odd fields. Access to closed caption data is provided independently of the hardware-scaled video data.
